Rolling Coal Mills provide fine coal for efficient burning. The mills grind the coal into small uniform particles.Analytical results showed the presence of excessive concentrations of 120 micrometer (um) Cutting/Plowing wear particles. The vast majority of these Cutting/Plowing wear particles were composed of High Carbon (~12%) steel and to a lesser extent medium alloy steel.
The high concentration of this Cutting/Plowing wear particles indicated an alignment problem. The supposition of an alignment problem was further supported by the presence of 30um Copper Alloy (including Brass &Bronze) Rolling Contact (Bearing) wear particles and 25um white non-ferrous metal Rolling Contact (Bearing) particles.
This white non-ferrous metal is most likely Aluminum. However, Nickel, Chrome and Stainless Steel are also other possibilities.
Coal Pulverizer Performance and Reliability
Pulverization is currently the favored method of preparing coal for burning. Mechanically pulverizing coal into a fine powder enables it to be burned like a gas, thus allowing more efficient combustion. Transported by an air or an air/gas mixture, pulverized coal can be introduced directly into the boiler for combustion. There are several pieces of equipment involved in processing coal to be burned in this fashion. Figure 1 is a simplified diagram detailing this equipment in a direct-fired coal burning system. Combustion Engineering, Babcock & Wilcox, and Riley Stoker Corp. are major manufacturers of coal pulverizing equipment. The four most common types of coal pulverizers are Ball-Tube Mills, impact mills, Vertical Roller Mills, Ring-Roll and Ball-Race Mills, etc.
Power generation industry studies have shown that coal pulverizers are an area where improved equipment reliability is badly needed. The Electric Research Institute (EPRI) has determined that 1% of plant availability is lost on average due to pulverizerrelated problems EPRI also identified oil contamination and excessive leakage as two areas where pulverizer drive train failures account for 53% of pulverizer problems.
